Water is sucked into the mouth with the use of a pharynx. Amphioxus belongs to Cephalochordate. In 1778 Amphioxus was first discovered and described by Palias . He called it a Molluscan animal. In 1834, it was described as a chordate animal by Costa. He called it ‘Branchistoma’. In 1836, Yarrell gave th name Amphioxus.

Amphioxus labeled

Branchiostoma, an invertebrate chordate. In this lab, you'll examine several different specimens of Branchiostoma, which is also called Amphioxus. Although the name Amphioxus is commonly used, Branchiostoma is the correct scientific name for this genus, so I'll use that name on this page. This organism also goes by the common name "lancelet," supposedly because it resembles a small lance. The amphioxus CNS lacks ventral roots; the paraxial muscles send muscle tails to synapse directly with motor neurons at the periphery of the CNS (Flood 1968).

Amphioxus, plural amphioxi, or amphioxuses, also called lancelet, any of certain members of the invertebrate subphylum Cephalochordata of the phylum Chordata. Amphioxi are small marine animals found widely in the coastal waters of the warmer parts of the world and less commonly in temperate waters. The lancelets, also known as amphioxi, consist of some 30 to 35 species of "fish-like" benthic filter feeding chordates in the order Amphioxiformes. They are the modern representatives of the subphylum Cephalochordata. Lancelets closely resemble, and are believed to be related to, 530-million-year-old Pikaia, fossils of which are known from the Burgess Shale. Zoologists are interested in them because they provide evolutionary insight into the origins of vertebrates. Lancelets contain many organs Scientific Name: Amphioxus Common Name: Lancelet.

They are commonly zig-zag, "W" or "V"-shaped muscle fibers. The myomeres are separated from adjacent myomere by connective tissues and most easily seen in larval fishes or in the olm.Myomere counts are sometimes used for identifying specimens, since their number corresponds to the number of vertebrae in the adults." 2020-05-12 Left: side view of the amphioxus Branchiostoma lanceolatum. Scientific Name: Amphioxus Common Name: Lancelet. General Characteristics: Lancelets are small fish-like animals less than 5cm in length. They are suspension feeders. However, there were different shades of opinion: Neal (1898) proposed that (1) Hatschek's anterior diverticula in amphioxus were homologs of the pre-premandibular somites of vertebrates and that (2) the first pair of muscular somites of amphioxus were homologs of the premandibular somites of vertebrates; in contrast, Smith and Newth (1917) suggested that the first pair of muscular somites of amphioxus correspond to the mandibular somites of vertebrates.
